Old ugly or damaged plaster — what a turnoff!
That old house may have tons of charm, but when the plaster is a disaster, you have a real problem on your hands.
The good news is, it is fixable in most cases. And when the plaster is just too far gone to repair, there are other remedies, like overlaying with drywall, or getting a contractor to replace the plaster.
But I want to focus on plaster repair. Yes, with some instruction, motivation and dedicated software, you can find many of the old patch and restore the beauty of the past. And it can be done without using any patch!
Despite what you may have heard, you can make a very good recovery and restoration of old walls or ceilings with plaster finishing materials. I have done hundreds of projects for a period of 35 years. Works – if you do it well.
For cracks, do much more than the old finger trick and gypsum.> Paper tape gypsum helps to bridge the crack and keep it from reopening. Treat each crystal as a common patch. Tapes, topping both hands, the marks of tools and sand the edges, and the plot back into the contest.
If there are many cracks on a wall or ceiling, or treat them skim the remaining surface and texture of everything off. Texturing process is very fun and gives you the opportunity to be creative. I have a number of unique texture and fun.
Small holesDings and can use "hot mud", a type of option common substance that is harder and harder than normal joint compound filled. Boiling mud, among others, is excellent for recording purposes and Topping, too, but more difficult to use because there is a limited period of time before it is more difficult. Water areas of glass must be scraped or wire brushed, cleaned, then painted with a stainblocker. When dry, you can continue.
